Scottow Cemetery
Scottow Cemetery is a very special Cemetery. The Cemetery has a section dedicated to Military Graves, War Graves and , of course, Parish Graves. We are supported and assisted in managing the Cemetery by the War Graves Commission who look after the War Graves and attend to much of the flowers and shrubbery surrounding them.
War Graves
During the early months of World War II, ground on the northern side of the burial ground was set aside by the Scottow Parish Council for burials from Coltishall R.A.F. Station, which is very close to it, and this is now the War Graves Plot. It was used only until September 1943, when growing shortage of space and the great expansion of the R.A.F. Station made it necessary for the new cemetery at North Walsham to be used. After the war a Cross of Sacrifice was erected at the far end of the plot. There are now nearly 60 WWII casualties commemorated in this site.
We are in the process of a comprehensive audit of Scottow Cemetery. We have checked our records correspond to the memorials and we have re-assessed the grave and memorial space we have available. We are about to undertake works to secure to repair some of the memorials and tidy some of the older graves.
